FDA announces the availability of an amended Environmental Assessment (EA) for AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS), a genetically engineered, rapid-growth Atlantic salmon owned by AquaBounty Technologies and produced at facilities on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The amended EA was prepared under NEPA in response to a November 2020 U.S. District Court order requiring FDA to analyze consequences if AAS escaped confinement and established in the wild. FDA expanded the analysis to assess escape pathways, disease transmission, and potential harm to the endangered Atlantic salmon of the Gulf of Maine. Based on the amended EA, FDA issued a FONSI and a no-effect determination under the Endangered Species Act.1
