APHIS has published a Notice of Availability for a revised draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and revised draft Plant Pest Risk Assessment (PPRA) evaluating the potential environmental impacts of granting nonregulated status to blight-tolerant Darling 54 American chestnut (Castanea dentata), developed by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry using genetic engineering to express an oxalate oxidase enzyme from wheat. The revised documents correct a prior labeling error that caused the line to be identified as Darling 58 instead of Darling 54. A 45-day public comment period closes July 21, 2025. The underlying EIS analyzes whether APHIS should deregulate this genetically engineered tree under 7 CFR part 340.1
