The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a Record of Decision and Subsequent Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. DPR-33, DPR-52, and DPR-68 to Tennessee Valley Authority for Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Units 1, 2, and 3, a three-unit boiling water reactor site in Athens, Alabama. The licenses authorize continued operation at up to 3,952 megawatts thermal per unit. The ROD is supported by a final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (NUREG-1437, Supplement 21, Second Renewal), which concluded that adverse environmental impacts of subsequent license renewal are not so great as to make preserving that option unreasonable for energy planning decision-makers.

The NRC has issued the final Environmental Impact Statement (NUREG-1437, Supplement 21, Second Renewal) evaluating the subsequent license renewal of Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Units 1, 2, and 3, located on Wheeler Reservoir approximately 10 miles northwest of Decatur, Alabama. The EIS covers an additional 20 years of operation beyond the expiration of the current renewed licenses (DPR-33, DPR-52, and DPR-68). The NRC staff concluded that adverse environmental impacts are not so great that preserving the license-renewal option for energy-planning decision-makers would be unreasonable.
