FHWA, as lead federal agency, and the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), as project sponsor, issued this Notice of Intent to prepare a Tier 2 EIS for the Chesapeake Bay Crossing Study, a project-level analysis of additional transportation capacity across the Chesapeake Bay along U.S. 50/301 in Maryland. The Tier 1 Study (completed April 2022) selected Corridor 7, the existing Bay Bridge alignment, for further study. MDTA proposes replacing the existing two-span Bay Bridge with a new two-span structure and has identified seven alternatives, including No-Build and six build alternatives ranging from 6 to 10 lanes across the Bay. Anticipated significant impacts include wetlands, cultural resources, minority and low-income populations, and Section 4(f) properties. Comments are due January 13, 2025; construction is not expected until 2032.1
