The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) issued a Record of Decision selecting Alternative 2, Decommission Dams, for the Coon Creek Watershed Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement in La Crosse, Monroe, and Vernon Counties, Wisconsin. The Plan-PEIS evaluated the final disposition of 14 flood control dams originally installed between 1961 and 1964 under the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act. Three dams failed in August 2018 after extreme rainfall, and engineering investigations found similar vulnerability in the remaining structures. NRCS chose decommissioning over no action or repair, citing dam safety, reduced risk to people, and restored stream connectivity. The ROD will be signed by the State Conservationist after the 30-day administrative action period.12
