EPA announced the availability of final TSCA risk evaluations for five phthalate plasticizers: BBP, DBP, DCHP, DEHP, and DIBP. Based on the weight of scientific evidence, EPA determined that all five chemicals pose unreasonable risk to human health and/or the environment under specific conditions of use. Risks to human health are driven by non-cancer inhalation exposures to workers. Environmental risks stem from chronic aquatic exposure through surface water, with DEHP also posing risks to sediment-dwelling organisms. No unreasonable risk to consumers or the general population was identified for any of the five substances. EPA must now initiate risk management rulemaking under TSCA section 6(a).12
