NRCS Nebraska has issued an NOI to prepare an EIS for the Elm and Turkey Creeks Watershed Project in Buffalo and Dawson Counties, Nebraska, near Kearney. The project responds to recurring flooding, including a 2019 catastrophic flood that caused over $35 million in damage. Two alternatives will be analyzed: No Action and a proposed action involving diversion channels to redirect floodwaters from Turkey Creek to the Platte River. The primary environmental concern is stream channel widening within critical habitat of the endangered Whooping Crane. Comments are due July 15, 2024.
