APHIS published a Notice of Availability on August 7, 2024 announcing an environmental assessment and risk evaluation proposing to recognize Costa Rica as free of classical swine fever (CSF). The evaluation, prepared in May 2023 following a September 2020 request from Costa Rica, concludes that CSF is not known to exist there and that Costa Rica's surveillance, prevention, and control measures are sufficient to minimize introduction risk to the United States. Because Costa Rica shares a land border with CSF-affected regions, Section 94.32 mitigation requirements would still apply. The public comment period closes September 6, 2024.12
