EPA is soliciting public comment on an Updated Draft Risk Calculation Memorandum to inform a Revised Draft Risk Evaluation for Formaldehyde under TSCA (docket EPA-HQ-OPPT-2018-0438). The document proposes a revised acute inhalation point of departure (POD) of 0.3 ppm, down from 0.5 ppm, and a total inhalation uncertainty factor of 1, based on controlled human exposure studies and recommendations from the HSRB and SACC peer review panels. EPA maintains that formaldehyde presents an unreasonable risk to human health but concludes that protecting against acute sensory irritation at 0.3 ppm is also protective against chronic and cancer effects.
