The BLM Siuslaw Field Office has released the Final EIS for the Hult Reservoir and Dam Safety project near Horton, Oregon. The 54-acre reservoir is impounded by an earthen dam built in the 1930s or 1940s that has exceeded its 50-year design life by over three decades. A 2018 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report found multiple failure points and warned that a catastrophic failure could affect 70 to 130 people downstream and damage Oregon Highway 36. The Final EIS analyzes four alternatives; BLM's preferred alternative is complete dam removal and stream restoration, which would also remove a failing fish ladder and establish riparian habitat along Lake Creek.12
