The Forest Service issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS for the Kootenai National Forest Over-Snow Motorized Use Travel Plan in Montana. The proposed action would designate approximately 1,302,000 acres and 380 miles of trails open to motorized over-snow vehicle use, with seasonal restrictions tied to grizzly bear den emergence. Impacts to wolverine, grizzly bear, Canada lynx, and whitebark pine will be assessed through a biological assessment. A potential amendment to the 2015 Land Management Plan's management area 5a boundary is also under consideration. The Draft EIS is expected in early 2025.
