APHIS has released a draft Plant Pest Risk Assessment (PPRA) and draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for Bayer U.S.-Crop Science petition 20-205-01p, seeking nonregulated status for genetically engineered maize event MON 95379, which produces two insecticidal proteins targeting lepidopteran pests. The draft PPRA concludes MON 95379 is unlikely to pose an increased plant pest risk compared to unmodified corn. The draft EA evaluates potential impacts on conventional and organic corn production, the physical environment, biological resources, human health, and animal welfare. Regardless of APHIS's decision, EPA registration restricts MON 95379 to no more than 100 total acres across Nebraska, Hawaii, and Iowa for breeding and seed increases only.
