NMFS approved an application under MMPA section 120(f) authorizing Oregon, Washington, and Idaho fish and wildlife agencies plus four tribal entities and the Willamette Committee to lethally remove up to 424 California sea lions and 62 Steller sea lions from the Columbia River mainstem (river miles 112 to 292) and tributaries with salmon or steelhead spawning habitat through August 22, 2030. The action aims to reduce sea lion predation on 14 ESA-listed salmonid populations and state-listed lamprey and sturgeon. A Columbia River Basin Task Force convened May 28, 2025, with all 12 members present recommending approval. NMFS determined existing compliance documents were sufficient and no new Environmental Assessment was required.12
