NASA has issued a Draft Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) for its Scientific Balloon Program, analyzing the addition of a new launch site in Burns, Oregon and a new tracking station in Idaho Falls, Idaho, alongside facility improvements at existing sites in Fort Sumner, New Mexico and Palestine, Texas. The proposal would increase annual balloon launches from 31 to up to 41, accommodating larger payloads and longer float times. NASA evaluated these actions against a No Action Alternative and tentatively concluded that impacts on physical, biological, and economic resources are not significant.
