Notice of Availability of a Draft Programmatic Environmental Assessment for the Nationwide Operation of Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems

DHS published a Notice of Availability for a draft Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) covering the research, development, testing, and evaluation of counter unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS), and nationwide C-UAS operational and training activities. The PEA evaluates potential environmental, cultural, socioeconomic, and physical impacts. DHS also issued a draft Finding of No Significant Impact, concluding no significant adverse impacts are anticipated provided routine best management practices are followed. Two alternatives are analyzed: the Proposed Action and a No Action Alternative. The 30-day public comment period closes September 3, 2025.

Notice of Intent To Prepare a Programmatic Environmental Assessment for the Nationwide Operation of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The Department of Homeland Security published a Notice of Intent to prepare a Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) for the nationwide research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) and operational use of counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS). The PEA will assess environmental impacts at a national scale from C-UAS activities conducted by DHS components, including along the southwest and northern borders. DHS seeks public scoping comments by April 7, 2025, and invites federal agencies with relevant jurisdiction or expertise to serve as cooperating agencies. The PEA will also establish standard Best Management Practices to reduce identified impacts and support compliance with other environmental statutes.
