The Department of the Navy is preparing a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas EIS (SEIS/OEIS) for continued use of up to four SURTASS LFA sonar systems aboard U.S. Navy surveillance ships in the western North Pacific and Indian Oceans. The SEIS/OEIS updates a series of prior analyses dating to 2001 and will support renewal of MMPA and ESA permits expiring in 2026. Three alternatives are under analysis: a minimum-hours alternative, a maximum-hours alternative adding two vessels (six total), and No Action. The National Marine Fisheries Service is a cooperating agency. Public scoping closes September 19, 2024.12
