The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for plutonium pit production in support of its Stockpile Stewardship and Management Program. Federal law (50 U.S.C. 2538a) mandates NNSA produce no fewer than 80 war reserve pits per year by 2030. The PEIS will evaluate single-site and multi-site alternatives, including Los Alamos National Laboratory (NM) and Savannah River Site (SC), over a 50-year analytical horizon through approximately 2075. Two virtual scoping meetings are scheduled for May 27-28, 2025, with public comments due by July 14, 2025. NNSA expects to issue a draft PEIS within one year and complete the final PEIS and Record of Decision within two years.12
