APHIS has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed release of the semiaquatic weevil Bagous nodulosus as a classical biological control agent for flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus) across the continental United States. Flowering rush, a European and Asian invasive, has naturalized in wetlands, lakes, and rivers across 23 states and is expanding. APHIS reached a preliminary Finding of No Significant Impact and is making the EA available for public comment through October 3, 2024. The weevil feeds on flowering rush from April through September and host-specificity testing indicates low risk to non-target species.1
