APHIS has prepared a final Environmental Assessment and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the release of Lophodiplosis indentata, a gall-forming fly, as a biological control agent against melaleuca (Melaleuca quinquenervia) in the contiguous United States. Melaleuca, an invasive tree from Australia, has infested more than 200,000 hectares of south Florida wetlands, disrupting water cycles, fire cycles, and native ecosystems. The fly joins three previously released biocontrol agents. APHIS concluded no EIS is required and has issued a permit for the release.12
