The Department of Veterans Affairs is preparing a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) to evaluate relocation of the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System Ioannis A. Lougaris VA Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. The existing VAMC, built in the 1930s at 975 Kirman Avenue, is seismically deficient, undersized, and landlocked on 13 acres; five campus buildings representing nearly 75% of campus square footage fail current seismic standards. VA analyzes three alternatives: a proposed relocation (with full and hybrid sub-options) to an approximately 60-acre site on the northern UNR campus, a renovation and expansion of the existing site, and no action. Expected impacts include construction traffic, loss of roughly 1,500 UNR parking spaces, displacement of UNR support facilities, and potential adverse effects to the existing VAMC historic district. The public scoping period closes August 4, 2025.1
