The Department of Veterans Affairs issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS for a new approximately 1,600,000 square foot replacement for the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. The existing facility, built in 1972, serves about 140,000 Veterans and faces aging infrastructure, space, and parking deficiencies as the enrolled Veteran population is projected to grow from 146,000 in 2022 to approximately 202,000 by 2042. Three alternatives are under consideration: relocating to a nearby 59-acre undeveloped site within the San Antonio medical district, redeveloping the existing 32-acre site, or taking no action. Scoping comments are due April 7, 2025, with the Draft EIS expected in late 2025 or early 2026.12
