The Forest Service has issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS for the Rio Grande National Forest Over Snow Travel Management Project in Colorado. The proposed action would designate approximately 1,342,162 acres (73% of the forest) for cross-country over-snow vehicle (OSV) use, along with roughly 260 miles of groomed motorized routes and 23 miles of non-motorized Nordic trails groomed with motorized equipment. The EIS will determine which roads, trails, and areas are open to OSV use, what vehicle classes are permitted, and what times of year use is allowed, with the result documented on an Over-Snow Vehicle Use Map. Scoping comments are due June 14, 2024; the DEIS is expected fall 2025.
