NMFS issued this Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS supporting a Secretarial Amendment to the Snapper-Grouper Fishery Management Plan for the South Atlantic Region. The amendment is needed because the South Atlantic red snapper stock remains overfished and is experiencing overfishing, driven primarily by high recreational dead discards, and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council has not acted to meet Magnuson-Stevens Act requirements to end overfishing. The EIS will analyze alternatives including catch limit adjustments, accountability measures, and discard reduction measures. The scoping comment period closes November 8, 2024, with the draft EIS targeted for January 2025 and a Record of Decision by May 2025.1
