The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District issued a Notice of Intent to prepare a DEIS for the South Carolina Highway 22 Extension Project, a new highway proposed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) running from US Highway 501 near Aynor to US Highway 17 near Surfside Beach in Horry County, South Carolina. The Corps is the lead federal agency under Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The project purpose is congestion relief, improved hurricane evacuation, and improved access across the Waccamaw River. The DEIS is anticipated in early 2027; scoping comments are due May 27, 2025.12
