Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Facilities Decommissioning Funding Plans

The NRC issued a final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact for its review and approval of the initial and updated decommissioning funding plans (DFPs) submitted by South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company for the independent spent fuel storage installation at South Texas Project Electric Generating Station Units 1 and 2. The NRC staff determined that approving the DFPs is a procedural and administrative action that will not alter licensed operations, change effluent releases, authorize construction, or disturb land. No EIS is required. The final EA and FONSI were available December 17, 2025.

The NRC issued an Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for an exemption request by South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company (STPNOC) at the South Texas Project Electric Generating Station (Bay City, Texas). The exemption allows STPNOC to shuffle 10 loaded MPC-37-CBS canisters in January 2025 and load two new MPC-37-CBS canisters in March 2025 in the HI-STORM FW MPC Storage System at the site's ISFSI, even though the CBS variant basket design was not formally incorporated into Certificate of Compliance No. 1032, Amendment No. 2. NRC concluded no significant environmental impacts would result.
