NRCS Missouri State Office issued this Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS for the St. Johns Watershed Project in Mississippi, New Madrid, and Scott Counties, Missouri. The project addresses chronic flooding caused by degradation of the St. Johns Bayou Ditch system and closure of Mississippi River floodgates, which impounds interior runoff and damages residences, agricultural land, and transportation infrastructure. Four alternatives are under consideration: no action, cleanout of Dry Run Ditch, construction of channel modifications and a 1,000-cfs pumping station at the St. Johns Bayou Basin outlet, and establishment of flood-resistant crops and native grass buffers. The scoping meeting was August 14, 2025, with written comments due September 12, 2025.12
