The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the relicensing of the 1,400-megawatt Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project (FERC Project No. 2740), operated by Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC. The project is located adjacent to Lake Jocassee in Oconee County, South Carolina.1 Duke Energy filed the relicense application on July 14, 2025, and FERC staff issued a Ready for Environmental Analysis notice on February 27, 2026.2 Staff determined that relicensing the project is not anticipated to constitute a major federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment, and therefore an EA rather than an EIS is being prepared. The EA will be issued for a 30-day public comment period, with all comments factored into the Commission's final licensing decision.
