The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) issued a Record of Decision selecting Alternative 7 for the West Fork Kickapoo Watershed in Monroe and Vernon Counties, Wisconsin. The selected action decommissions all 9 flood control dams (originally built 1956-1971) by excavating notches to pass the 100-year flood without impounding water, and replaces the failed WFK-1 dam with a new high-hazard, multi-purpose dam about 1,000 feet downstream. The decision responds to two 2018 dam failures caused by internal erosion through fractured sandstone abutments and addresses ongoing safety risk to the remaining structures. The replacement dam restores flood protection for approximately 49 homes and recreational facilities at Jersey Valley County Park.12
