The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS for the Wilmington Harbor, North Carolina Project, a federally authorized navigation improvement proposed by the North Carolina State Ports Authority. The project would deepen and widen approximately 38 miles of the Wilmington Harbor federal navigation channel along the Cape Fear River. Three alternatives are under consideration: a 47-foot deepening, a 46-foot deepening, and a no-action alternative. Key resource concerns include water quality, wetlands, aquatic resources, endangered species, and environmental justice. The Draft EIS is anticipated in Fall 2025; scoping comments are due July 12, 2024.
