The U.S. Forest Service is initiating a revision of the Tongass National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan, the largest national forest in the country at 16.7 million acres in Southeast Alaska, and has issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS. The current plan was last revised in 1997. The revision will address six preliminary needs to change covering plan modernization, local economic prosperity, recreation and tourism growth, shared stewardship, subsistence uses, and indigenous knowledge. Cooperating agencies include the State of Alaska, City and Borough of Wrangell, City of Ketchikan, and EPA. Scoping comments are due March 20, 2026; a draft EIS is expected in fall 2026 with a final plan targeted for May 2027.12345
