A NEPA comment period is the window in which a federal agency must take public input on a proposed action before it decides. The window opens on a Notice of Intent, a draft Environmental Impact Statement, or an Environmental Assessment. Length varies by document and agency, so the date that matters is the close date on the specific filing. The table above lists every open window we track, sorted so the soonest deadlines are easy to find. Filter by agency or state to narrow to the ones you care about, or search the full index for a project by name or docket id.
When a federal agency proposes an action that may affect the environment, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires it to take public comment on its analysis. During the open window anyone can submit input on a Notice of Intent, a draft Environmental Impact Statement, or an Environmental Assessment. The agency must consider substantive comments before it makes a decision.
It varies by document type and agency. Draft Environmental Impact Statement comment windows have historically run at least 45 days; Environmental Assessments are usually shorter, often 15 to 30 days; and scoping comment periods opened by a Notice of Intent are commonly around 30 days. Because the rules and agency practice change, the only reliable number is the close date on the specific filing, which is what we track on every row above.
Most agencies accept comments through regulations.gov or a docket link in the official notice; some take comments by email or mail to a named contact. Open the project to find the docket id and submission method. Substantive comments that raise specific environmental concerns, data, or alternatives carry more weight than form letters or simple support or opposition.
The agency reviews and responds to substantive comments, then moves to the next step in the NEPA process. For a draft EIS that means producing a final EIS and, later, a Record of Decision. For an Environmental Assessment it means either a Finding of No Significant Impact or a decision to prepare an EIS. Once a window closes, the chance to shape that analysis through the public record is generally gone.
Agencies publish notices in the Federal Register, post dockets on regulations.gov, and maintain their own project pages (for example EPA's EIS database and BLM ePlanning). They are scattered across dozens of systems, which is why we pull them into one index and surface the close date for each open window.
